Danwei TV - Hutong Chronicles - Luoguxiang

Synopsis from Danwei TV:

Nan Luoguxiang is one of the oldest hutongs in Beijing and has been a residential neighborhood for hundreds of years. In the last few years, bars, cafés and boutique stores have flourished in the alley way, drawing tourists and Beijing residents in search of low key night life and a taste of old Beijing.

In the last six months, the local government renovated the alley way, destroying temporary structures that some residents had built, cleaning up the facades of the buildings and repaving the alley with grey stones. Was the renovation successful, or just another example of bad urban planning in Beijing?

This Hard Hat Show episode shows the hutong renovation in progress and the end result, and includes an interview with Xiao Bian'r, the owner of Pass By Bar, the oldest bar / café on Luoguxiang.

NB: The Youtube version loads faster outside of China.

The Tattoo Show Convention China 2007

I've got ear- and nose-piercings and I'm still thinking of getting more just to freak the hell out of everyone I meet here in China, but somehow I still haven't found the balls to get my first tattoo yet (not unless there is a general anesthetist on hand in the house to knock me out first, that is). The Tattoo Show Convention China 2007 caught our attention because although Chinese characters and designs have long been the favourite of tattoo enthusiasts around the world, you don't really think of China itself as a land of tattoo aficionados, do you?

QAF Beijing: Eye on Gay Shanghai

The wonderful guys behind QAF Beijing, Steven and Jack, interviewed me for a special Shanghai edition of their groundbreaking little podcast which explores gay culture in China. Catch me at the end of the second vid. The third vid is the Chinese episode which has me talking (in very bad Mandarin) about the pink dollar economy in China.
